Ayurveda – Your Life Knowledge

Ayurveda is a traditional, ancient Indian health science. The name “Ayurveda” means “life knowledge”. It is a holistic system that emphasizes balancing the body, mind and spirit to prevent and treat disease. This 5,000-year-old practice focuses on harmonizing the body with nature through diet, herbal remedies, yoga and meditation, exercise, lifestyle and body cleansing.

Your Own Metabolic Types – Doshas

Everyone has their own metabolic type which in Ayurveda is called, the Doshas.  In Ayurveda, all living things consist of five elements: ether, air, fire, water and earth.  The manifestations of these elements through the doshas in different proportions contribute to an individual’s physical, mental and emotional make-up.

There are three doshas – “Vata”, “Pitta” and “Kapha.”

  • The fiery and intense Pitta type is a combination of fire and water.
  • In contrast, a delicate Vata, that can never seem to get warm, is a combination of air and space.
  • The contented Kapha type is a combination of water and earth.

The dosha is dynamic and constantly changes in response to weather, environmental conditions and stress. Your habits, whether good or bad, are manifestations of your dosha. Whatever your habits, they all result in a shift in your make-up which could lead to the beginnings of disease if not balanced with care and a healthy diet.

Why it Matters

Getting to know and appreciate your dosha is key to knowing yourself. It provides clues for what you should eat and what things you should address when your energy gets out of whack. The more you know about what may cause certain reactions or tendencies, the easier it will be to keep everything in balance.

On our Rejuvenate in Malabar tour, you can consult with an Ayurvedic doctor to discover your dosha type and learn appropriate adjustments for your lifestyle. This could improve your quality of life and may prevent some diseases.
