Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Periyar wildlife sanctuary is South India’s most popular wildlife sanctuary and it’s highest peak reaches 6,624 ft high. Periyar is near Thekkady and covers an area of 357 sq miles. The topography consists of steep and rolling hills which are thickly wooded. The sanctuary surrounds the man-made Periyar Lake, created by the British in 1895. It is the major watershed of two important rivers of Kerala, the Periyar and the Pamba.

This vast region is home to gaur (Indian bison), sambar, wild boar, langur (nilgiri tahrs), lion tailed macaque; as well as 900 to 1000 elephants and 35 to 40 hard-to-spot tigers.  There is also an elephant reserve and one of India’s 27 tiger reserves. A guided jungle walk takes visitors to some of the beautiful hiking trails, cascading waterfalls and cardamom plantations.

Enjoy the serene and bountiful scenery and learn about the plants and local history.  You will definitely see small animals during the hike.  For the large animals, it always depends on luck.

It is advised you wear long trousers, long sleeve shirt, hat, good walking shoes, sunscreen and bring enough water.
